Ways we care

We make children’s books with love, for children, for books and for the planet. We are committed to being a responsible and sustainable publisher who puts the wellbeing of children and the planet at the forefront of our business decisions, balancing purpose with profit – and our profit is ploughed back into making more quality books, working with talented creatives, and supporting children’s and environmental charities.

  • Children

    Safety, durability, quality

We take our responsibilities as a publisher and manufacturer seriously, ensuring that the content of our books and their production is of the highest quality for the age intended. Our board books are tested at certified laboratories to comply with the Toy Safety Standard of EN71. We also take great pains to ensure that any novelty elements have both purpose and durability.

We are passionate about the role books play in children’s lives. Reading together strengthens bonds and is important to a child's development. Research shows that early literacy gives children an advantage in life.

By giving young readers our books, you are giving them something that will help to develop key skills and an understanding of the world. From ourTummy Time series, which aims to stimulate babies’ brains as well as their muscles, to our non-fiction picture books, which we hope will inspire and educate older children about our world.

At Mama Makes Books we have future plans to work with schools, using our books to inspire, educate and encourage positive change.

    Supporting the children’s book community

The children’s book community is a happy and friendly place. It’s also big business, worth £290 million in 2020 with over 48.4 million books sold*. The lion’s share of that is bestselling authors published by the Big 5 publishing companies selling through Amazon, but here’s some food for thought:

    • Small independent publishers like us bring something unique. We work with young and emerging talent, under-represented authors, and creatives who are passionate about what they do, innovating and pushing boundaries.

    • Independent booksellers offer a welcoming place to browse, and expert advice/curated lists to find the perfect book.

    • Literacy charities, such as BookTrust, encourage a love of reading and give books to disadvantaged children, some of whom don’t own a book of their own.

    • Schools and libraries are the best at developing literacy and offer accessibility to books for all.

We aim to appreciate, support and boost each of these groups, and encourage you to do the same.

  • Planet

    Responsibility, transparency, sustainability

At Mama Makes Books we love our planet and the life on it as much as we love our books. We are committed to finding a happy balance between purpose and profit. Every small change makes a big difference, which is why we decided to start our business in the right way – by monitoring our impact as a business and being transparent about our carbon footprint.

The publishing industry has complex supply chains and as a small publisher we cannot influence all of these. What we can do however is keep our own impact as low as possible and try to influence both suppliers and customers to do the same.

Our 2024 charity

Mama Makes Books wants to support good causes with a particular focus on children and conservation. At the end of this year, we will contribute 5% of end-of-year profits to the Woodland Trust, UK's largest woodland conservation charity. They fight to protect and restore UK’s woodland habitats, including 1,000 ancient woodlands, and give away hundreds of thousands of trees to schools and communities.
